GOVERNMENT ROAD WORKS.

TANGITU MAIN ROAD. The Tangitu settlers will be glad to learn that there is every reason to assume the dreadful main road between Waimiha and the settlement is to be placed in a thoroughly satisfactory condition during the present season. A considerable amount of work has already been done at the settlement end in the shape of fascining and pumicing, and this, while not what may be termed permanent work, is still sufficiently good if properly drained and repaired to last for some time. From the Waimiha end it is intended to metal for a distance of about five miles, and this will connect tne pumice and metal. It is understood the method to be adopted in carrying out the work is to lay a foundation of limestone spawls, and metal on top with river gravel or metal from a pit. The limestone will be conveyed un the railway from Te Kuiti and spawls and gravel will be trammed from Waimiha along the road in trucks. Satisfactory arrangements ha"e been made for the laying of the tram line, and no time is tojjbe lost in carrying out the work. Mr Donaldson, assistant-road engineer, has everything well in hand, and the work of laying the metal should be commenced early in the new year. Only those who havy had the experience of travelling over the road in winter can appreciate what a boon to the settlers the completion of the road will be, and the department is to be complimented for the comprehensive plan adopted in connection with the work.
