TE KUITI-MOKAU ROAD.

DUAL CONTROL UNDESIRABLE. HANDED OVER TO COUNCIL. The following letter, which has been received by the chairman of the Waitomo County Council frum the Public Works Department, in connection with the Te Kuiti-Mokau road, will be of interest to a large number of settlers: —■ "The assistant road engineer at Te Kuiti has recently made representations regarding the position of work on the Te Kuiti-Mokau road within the Waitomo County, and from the information furnished, it appears that the dual control of the road which at the present time exists, whereby the department maintain the road from the five-mile peg onward, and the county has in hand the expenditure of the vote for metalling, etc., is not satisfactory. The contract for metal crushing which was also Ist by the department just prior to the expenditure of the vote being handed over to the council is still incomplete. The Minister has given careful consideration to the circumstances as reported by the assistant road engineer, and as iast year's vote was handed to the council for expenditure, he is prepared to hand over also the expenditure of the available balance on the crurent year's vote, viz., £1670 15s Gd, together with the metal crushing contract, previously referred to. This contract was let to Mr P. Fouhy for £485 3s 4d, and £176 4s 7d has been paid to date. This contract is very considerably over the due date for completion, and your council could either cancel same, or allow it to be completed as you may think to be best. The Government maintenance of the road from the five-mile peg onwards will, of course, cease. I shall be glad of an early reply in the matter.—W. S. SHORT, Assistant Under-Secretary.
