DAVIS CUP CONTEST.
ENGLAND WINS SINGLES. AUSTRALIA TAKES DOUBLES. By TeleEraph..—Press Association.—Copyright, Melbourne, Thursday. Perfect weather prevailed and the tennis courts were in excellent condition for the opening of the Davis Cup contest. The atcendanco was about 40,000. Dixon yielded to the persuasion of his colleagues, and decided to play instead of Beamish. Tha Englishmen met with a fine reception. Tha game between Parke and Brookes ended in disappointment for Australia, the Englishman winning handsomely. Heath was outclassed by Dixon, who showed fine form. Details of the score are a follow: Parke (England) beat Brookes (Australia), B—6,8 —6, 6—3, 5 —7, 6 —2. Dixon (England) beat Heath (Australia), 5 —7, 6 —l, 6—4, 6—4. The Englishmen took the two rubbers, winning six sets, 48 games to the Australians' two sets, 37 gamcH. Received November 29, 10.15 p.m. Melbourne, Friday. In the Davis Cup tennis tournament, Brookes and Dunlop beat Parke and Beamish, 6 —4, 6—l, 7 —5. In the first set each won the service except Beamish, who lost his first. In the second set Beamish started by winning his service, after which the Australians carried all before them, winning a sequence of six games, the last three with the loss of onlv five points, lasting ten minutes. In the seventh game the third set produced probably the best rally seen in Melbourne. All four engaged in short sharp volleying at the net last a dozen strokes, Parke finally winning. After the scores were called five all the Australians won two games and the match. It was a brilliant exhibition of tennis. Dunlop was the be a t of the four, showing fine volleying and overhead work. Brookes ha 9 not shown his usual dash and does not, as ordinarily, dominate the court. Parke is distinctly the better of the Britishers. Beamish, as a doubles player, did not seem in the same class as the other three.
