PIO PIO.
VALEDICTORY SOCIAL. Own Correspondent. A farewell social to Messrs Lewis and Nash was held in the Town Hal! on the 22nd inst. Mr C. K. Wilson, M P., presided. The following programme was rendered to an appreciative audience: —Pianoforte duet, Mesdamea Elliott and Livingston; song, "Long Ago in Alkala," Mrßlackman (encore, "Father O'Flynn) ; song, "The Promise of Life," Mrs Cowan (encore "My Treasure") ; Mr Wilson created much amusement by a humorous recitation; song, "The Maid of Malabar," Mr Pochin; song, "Banks o' Loch Lomond," Mrs Tunnicliffe; song, "Down in the Deep," Mr Ward; Mr Hattaway gave a fine description of the "Charge of Inkeramn" in a recitation of that name; song, "Love's Old Sweet Song," Mrs Hattaway. By special request Mrs Cowan sang "A Perfect Day," arid Mr Blackman "There's a Land," both of which were much enjoyed. Mr Wilson, in a lengthy and eulogistic speech, spoke of the good work done by Mr Lewis in the district during the last four years, and though contending against great difficulties, he had always landed his coach and passengers safely. Mr Wilson voiced the sentiment of all in saying that it was a distinct loss to the district to lose Mr Lewis and his able lieutenant, Mr Nash. After wishing th 9 guests every prosperity in their new sphere of action, Mr Wilson called upon Mr Wall, who, on behalf of the settlers of Pio Pio and surrounding district, presented Mr Lewis with a handsome silver tray suitably engraved, and Mr Nash with a fine watch. The recipients suitably responded, and three hearty cheers were then given, and all joined in singing "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows. The hall was then cleared and the remainder of an enjoyable evening spent in dancing.
