WHY HE WANTED A JOB.
"Civil service has done a lot of good, of course, but it has taken a lot of humor out of life,'' a Xew England Senator remarked, smiling-. "Just after 1 was first elected to the Senate, a man approached me, recounted his services on my behalf. and remarked that he would like me to get him a Government position. "All right. I'll sec what I can engineer," I replied. Then, with an idea of finding out what department or bureau he would be best suited to, 1 asked, 'What can you do?' "He looked at me in astonishment. "Good gracious, Senator!" he exclaimed. 'lf I could do anything, you don't suppose I would be after a Government job, do you?' "—"Brooklyn Life."
