TE KUITI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ENGINEERS' REPORT. I have to report on the works of the past month as follows: —■ Metalling work has been carried out on the following roads:—Tawa street 156 cubic yards, Mangaorino road 109J cubic yardsjAwakino road 116£ cubic yards, Te Kr,mi road 57 cubic yards, patching other roads and footpaths 36 cubic yards, a total of 475 cubic yards. The expenditure on wages has been — Loan account £lOll 9s 6d, and on General account £26 0s Bd. The work of renewing the decking and forming foot-track at the King street bridge is now in hand and will be pushed on with as rapidly as possible. A commencement has been made with the metalling of the Te Kumi road, and as soon as the King street bridge decking is renewed, I propose consolidating this with the steam roller. As instructed I visited the school grounds with Mr Walsh, chairman of the School Committee, and would recommend that 9 inch pipes be put in through tee school grounds to take the surface water from Rora street and that the existing box-culvert be extended about 10ft, the roadway being the filled in to its proper level. By doing this an entrance can be obtained to the school grounds at a point about a chain below the present horse entrance, and would save the necessity of a bridge as previously proposed. The amount of £4O, which the Education Board are, I understand, prepared to expend on this work, will be sufficient for the work of putting in the pipes and providing access to the school as required. In connection with the request of the Bowling Club for a connection to the water supply, 1 find on looking fully into the matter that a length of 812 feet would be required to carry the pipe to the boundary of the bowling green from the nearest main. Of this length 254 feet was put in some little time ago, then the work was stopped. Our By-laws provide for the Borough only laying 100 yards and as this is done with the exception of 36 feet, leaving a balance of 558 feet to be completed, I should be glad to know whether anything further is to be done or whether the Bowling Club are to pay for the extension beyond the 100 yards limit. The cost of the latter would be about £ls. Several house services have been been connected to the water supply and temporary repairs carried out on the main pipe line. I replied to the District Health Officer's letter re "septic tank," and attach here with a further letter from him on the subject. As the matter of the completion of the tank is in the hands of Mr Metcalfe, I am forwarding him copies of the correspondence for his information. I have not yet had time to look thoroughly into the Medical Officer's gestion, which appears to be a very good one, but I will make careful investigations during the course of the next week or sn. Concrete blocks are being made for the permanent levels of the Borough and will be fixed in position during the next few week's. Warden's shed has been moved and fumigated, and is now being used for storing materials. —S. B. DODGE, Borough Engineer.
