Owing to the large number of passengers waiting to come out under the assisted passages scheme, the High Commissioner made arrangements some time ago with the New Zealand Shipping Company for the Tongariro to make a special trip. She left London on August 22nd and arrived in Wellington the other morning. The Tongariro is purely an immigrant ship, having all her passengers in the third clasp, and has no cargo for Wellington. The Tongariro landed at Wellington 383 passengers all old. The class of immigrant is described as specially satisfactory, and the officers speak very highly of them. "They are," said one officer, "The best lot I have seen come out to New Zealand." There were 108 Bingle girls on board, who are described as "domestics." There are many wives with their families coming out to rejoin their husbands.'
