TARANAKI LAND BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the Taranaki Land Board was held last week. There were present the Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr G. H. Bullard), in the chair, and Messrs H. Hislop, J. Ratenbury and J. McCluggage. Leave of absence was granted to Mr C. J. Ryan.
The following applications for land were received:—Charles Stafford, for sections 49 and 15, Spotswood; application approved subject to a satisfactory examination by Commissioner. J. Egarr, for section 56, Spotswood; approved on same conditions. G. R. Mossman applied for 4 acres of section 2u, block 15, Aria, adjoining his present holding, to enable him to get access to hiq new homestead; resolved to approve of disposal of the area at £3 10s per acre on a renewable lease. The application by the Mangaroa School Committee for an area for school purposes was postponed. J. Barrott objected to the rent proposed for a yearly tenancy of section 5, block 4, Rangi, containing sa. Or. 20p.—Resolved to grant the application at £1 per annum. A satisfactory explanation had been received from Mrs P, M.jßleasel, who selected section 1, block 6, Tangitu, and within a few days applied to transfer to her husband and his mate.—Accepted.
A proposal was made by the ranger that section 5, block 13, Ohura, containing 83§ acres, known as the Tatu Village Reserve, be felled and grassed before offering. Recommended it be felled and grassed with a view to being leased; the fencing to remain for future consideration.
In conection with the offering of section 14, block 16, Aria, under part 3 of the Act, it was now necessary to fix the price,—Resolved to fix the price at £2 103 per acre. The valuation of section 15, block 11, Map3ra, forfeited by R. Cleaver, had been received, and it was necessary to fix the price for re-offering.— Resolved to adopt the ranger's valuation of improvements (£IBB 7s 6d) and the value of the land (40s per acre).
Application had been made for the lease of a small island in the Waitara river, which it was proposed to set aside as a quarry reserve —Resolved to recommend it be set aside as a quarry reserve and that the disposal of the land be left in the Commissioner's hands.
Appication was made by the Waitomo County Council for a certificate of hypothecation of thirds for Aria loan. —Approved of the application up to the amounts of special rates. Application was made by the High School Board, New Plymouth, for conversion of section K, area 3a. 2r. 20p. from a primary school to a secondary school reserve, for a site for a girls' high school.—Resolved that the Governor be recommended to consent to the reserve being set aside fo«. J a secondary school site. The Taranaki County Council wrote stating it was still averse to the disposal of part of Omata road, closed in part N.R.1., Grey street.—No action was taken.
The following settlers were granted the issue of their licenses: —J. Moore, section 20, block 11, Mapara; L. J. Bacon, section 8, block 2, Tangitu: J. W. Orr, section 3, block 7, Mapara. Ranger Twiss reported on sixteen sections showing only three defaulters. —The report was adopted. Advice was received from the Under-Secretary for Lands re timber floating on Ohura river.—Resolved to acknowledge the receipt of the letter. In regard to a proposal to give a temporary occupation right of section 20, block 14, Ohura, to Oliver Old. the board resolved to grant a year to year lease of a part to be laid out by the ranger, to provide against the landing place being blocked. Charles Joyce .applied to transfer part section 10, block 9, Ohura, to S. H. J. Brown.—Approved. William Schneider applied to transfer part of section 6, block 2, Mahoe.. to Lawrence Smith. —Approved. E. K. Wilson applied to take T. H. S. Wilson as partner in section 8, block 2, Mahoe. —Approved. Mr Kelly applied to exchange sections 2 and 29, block 15, Ngatimaru, with Peter Moratt. Approved, subject to all the necessary documents beiing received in order. John Wright applied to transfer section 6, block 6, Waro, to Frank Hagensen.—Approved. J. L. Guilford's attorney applied to trnasfer-section 22, block 1, Tangitu, to Mrs Guilford. —Approved, provided all conditions were in order.
John Fergusson applied to transfer section 8, block 12, Aria, to Walter and Lucy Fry.—Approved. R. Mounsey applied to transfer to Mrs Alice Jam°s, section 2, block 15, Ngatimaru.—Approved. John Muir applied to transfer sections 5, 46, 48, 50, block 1, Mahoe. to John Muir, junr., on account of old age.—Approved. E. J. Meade applied to transfer to G. H. Milne and Miss J. Kenman, section 3, block 8, Ohura, 1000 acres.— Approved (the attention of incoming tenants to be specially called to resi dential conditions, and subject to Miss Kenman's being eligible). E. C. Kent applied to transfer section 5, block 10, Waro, to E. and H. Leary.—Mr Kent, senr., attended, and the transfer was approved. The ranger's report on the proposed aggregating in connection with transfer of sections 11 and 17, block 6, Kapara, from H. C. S. Hughes to John Cheswass was approved owing to the roughness of the country.
The application to transfer section 1, block 1.6, Ohura,' from Walter Beard to James Malone, which was refused at the July meeting, was approved, the transferee to be warned that residence would be strictly enforced at the end of twelve months.
S. Hanna applied to transfer sections 7, 31 and 36, block 15 ; Ngatimaru, to L. G. Pinny.—Approved subject to a satisfactory explanation as to another land held by Mr Pinny. J. Jacobson, whose application to transfer sections 8, 9, 3, 5, block 4, Omona, was refused in June last, now applied to transfer to Mrs C. M.
Collyer. Mr Jacobson appeared and made a statement that the land was too much for him, and that the farilities for shooling were not good. Mr Collver attended and stated he wanted the land to work, as his present holding wcs inconvenient. Resolved to refuse the conpent, Mr McCluggage dissenting. Mary Bullot applied to transfer sections 544 and 571, New Plymouth, to her son-ink-law, W. Saddler.—Approved. E. Owens applied to sub-lease to James Rodgers section 10, block 12, Aria. —Approved. James Rodgers also applied to sublease section 12, block 13, Ohura, to M. and V. Rodgers.—Approved. D. H. Proffit applied to sub-lease section 1, block 6, Mahoe, to D. H. Proffit, junr.—Approved owing to the roughness of the country. John Sheehy applied to sub-lease sections 18 and 20, block 9, Mimi, to A. M. Bower.—Approved owing to the roughness of the country. < C. M. Hawken applied to sub-lease sections 3, 5, 10, block 11, Waro, total area 1391 acres to E. and A. McMullan.—Refused on account of aggregation of area. Were and Were applied to sublease to W. H. Rossiter part section 545, Patea district, 10 acres 3 roods 3 poles for seven years at £6o.—Approved.
A report had been made on the proposed sub-diviison of section 15, bbek 12, Mapara. —Resolved to amend the previous resoluiton and to grant a temporary occupation to J. Pattils and J. A. Taylor, with a view to including it in their licenses when issued. It was resolved to recommend that the unsold sections in the Spotswood settlement be withdrawn for sale, with a view to the consideration of the revaluation of the sections.
