Next Wednesday evening in the | Alexandra Rink the Municipal Band will receive a benefit picture show by the generosity of Mr Curie, who has arranged a specially selected programme. The band has on more than one occasion assisted the furtherance ot charitable objects, anu in return look with confidence to a record house. We take this opportunity of urging the claims of the band, and in patronising the entertainment an enjoyable evening will be spent and patrons will also have the double pleasure of knowing the funds of the band will be augmented. Since assuming office I have observed that difficulties frequently arise as to the approval by departmental engineers of plans prepared by local bodies for erection of bridges to be built out of Government grants. With a view to overcoming this, instructions will be issued for the preparation of standard drawings for hridges of varying sizes and classes, which, When completed, will be available for use by local authorities. By this means I am assured that economy in construction and, generally speaking, a very much better class of bridge should result. —Public Works Statement.
