King Country Chronicle WEDNESDAY, OCT. 9, 1912. MUNICIPAL ENDOWMENTS.

The question of endowments for King Country town centres ia one which is likely to hulk large in the public eye for some linn! to come. In the original planning of the. towns no provision was made in the direction of assisting the infant communities to carry out town improvements. Apparently the privilege of residing in the King Country, and of paying rent to the original owners whs considered a sufficient distinction to compensate for tlio lack of reserves or endowments. In the case of Te Kuiti the only reserve for public purposes consists of a small block of live or six acres which was banded over by tho Government as a domain. In tho original plans of tho town issued by the Maori Land Hoard in a small block marked "hospital reserve," bur. it is understood the necessary formalities for vesting this reserve in tho properly constituted authority have not been complied with. The native owners have thus contributed nothing' towards lightening the burden of local government, and there is no reason to suppose they will be called upon to do so. In tho circumstances the request made by tho people that tho Government, should assist by providing a suitable reserve as a recreation ground is undoubtedly deserving of sympathetic consideration. Assisti ance in any form will be welcome, hut it is to be honed an effort will bo made to obtain a block of rural land which, with its constantly increasing value as progress ensues, will contribute materially to the revenue of the borough. Lack of foresight in tho past in promoting town settlement on a system which was inevitably bound to inflict hardship on the residents has created a position which demands consideration. It is to be hoped no opportunity will be lost of directing attontion to the matter with n view to promoting tho welfare of tho district in the interests of all concerned.
