TE KUITI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

LThe following is the engineer's report submitted to the last meeting of the Borough Council "The weather having been very wet during the past fortnight very little outside work has been earried out, the crusher has only worked three days during the past week putting through 50 cubic yards per day. Crossings have been laid down as instructed across Rora street, giving access to the railway station and Awakino road; patching has been done in Rora street, Mangaorino road, Rata street and Jennings street. Fencing has been erected at the junction of Rimu street and Mangaorino road, and stop pests put in in King street. The water causing the trouble complained of by Mr McLean in Matai street comes from private property and it is not the council's duty to carry out the work of cleaning the natural watercourse on private land. The formation at the foot of the Ahuroa Siroad has been repaired it being in a bad state as reported at last meeting. On Wednesday last I inspected the water supply intake and found the fencing of the land progressing well. Various parts of the pipe line require attention, one place particularly. Here the pipes are carried for about 120 feet on trestles. The trestles are sliding on the wet clay formation, leaving the pipe line hanging. The line is on a curve at this point and owing to the settlement taking place every joint is broken. Further the pipes themselves have commenced to leak through numerous pin holes in the pipes. I would recommend that wherever instances like this occur, that the pipes be replaced by a stronger class of pipe, preferably the Mannesman Weldless Steel Tube which has proved eminently satisfactory whenever it has been used. Temporary repairs are to be carried out at this point, until arrangements can be made to do it in a permanent manner. In connection with the Loan Proposals I would recommend that a special committee of the whole Council be held some time previous to the next regular meeting, too go into the whole matter and discuss the report and approximate estimates I have in course of preparation.—J. B. Dodge, Engineer."
