King Country Chronicle WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 25, 1912 TOWN IMPROVEMENTS.

With commendable promptitude the new borough engineer has got to work on a scheme of works for the ensuing year, and the proposals are to be discussed at a special meeting to be held on Monday next. Of chief importance among a number of pressing requirements is the matter of putting the streets of the town in order. A great amount of formation work has been accomplished, but the carrying of the work to the stage uf permanency by means of metal has yet to be faced. An active policy in this respect is essentially necessary to the Drogress of the town, and it is to be hoped sincerely that the experience of the season just ending will have impressed the local auhtorities

to inspire them ro special activity. For a considerable time past it has been apparent that a further loan would have to be raised in order to complete works already in hand, and to carry out further necessary improvements. The council wisely decided to await the engineer's report and estimate before requesting the ratepayers to authorise the raising of further finance for the purpose mentioned. With the production of the report, however, comes the necessity for early action. The working season is just beginning and full advantage should be taken of the summer to push vigorously ahead with the necessary works. As far as the roads are concerned there is still a balance in hand of the allocation from the original loan, and no delay need occur in the metalling programme. It is intended to provide electrical power for working the stone crushing plant, but as the electrical plant will not be completed until close on the end of the season Mt is to be hoped ample provision will be made for a supply of metal in the meantime. The loan proposal has been carefully worked out and the pressing urgency of the works for which the money is intended should be a sufficiently convincing argument to ensure a unanimous vote in the affirmative when the poll comes to be taken. Time is a highly important factor in the case, and by promptly authorising the loan the ratepayers will do all that is possible on their part to emancipate the town from conditions which have already reigned too long.
