WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Waitomo County Council was held on Monday evening. There were present Crs Scholes (chairman), Smyth, Hoffman, O'Dwyer, Berry, Were, Gregg and Johnson. Messrs Wynya r d and Skelton wrote regarding the dedication of roads in the Hangatiki township.—Crs Johnston and Hoffman wer6 appointed to sign the deed of dedication. Kio Kio Road. —F. D. Danks wrote drawing attention to the bad state of Kio Kio road. —The matter was left in the hand of the member for the riding. Road Grader. —The Otorohanga town clerk wrote asking permission to use the grader to do certain wo-k in the Otorohanga townhip. —■ Permission granted until grader was required by council.

Application for Road. —R. M. Hogben wrote with repect to access to his section at Rangitoto. The writer had a section leased from the Maori Land Board.—lt was pointed out that the responsibility of giving access to the section mentioned rested with the Maori Land Board.

Arapae Contract.—Mr Horniblow waited on the council concerning slips on the Arapae road. He had joined the successful tenderer, Mr Smith, in the job. The late engineer had instructed them to keep the road open if any slips occurred and notify him, The work of clearing slips had cost them £97. The road was extremely liable to slips and he hoped the council would meet them in the matte". The road was completed a month ago. The Government engineer had not yet been out to inspect the road. The chairman said the engineer had arranged to go out and the representations would be considered.

Rangitoto Road.—-It was resolved on the motion of Cr Berry seconded by the chairman, that the balance due to Rangitoto settlers in connection with the cost of survey through Rangitoto Tuhua A be refunded. Standard Bridge. A resolution pased by the Wairoa County Council advocating the adoption of standard bridge blans for county councils was approved. Rangitoto 70, A.—lt was resolved on the motion of Cr Berry, seconded by Cr Hoffman, that the council urge the necessity fur a road being surveyed through Ranigtoto 70 A. Thirds Hypothecated.—The thirds in the following districts were hypothecated for meeting interest and sinking fund on the metalling loans: —Pukearuhe, Matapau, and Otoro-hanga-Pirongia. Telephone Proposal. T. Gwillim wrote asking permission to erect a telephone wire across the Tumu Tumu road to connect with Waitomo Caves post office. Permission granted subject to the usual conditions.

Expenditure of Grants. —The Public Works Department wrote regarding, the expenditure of grants.—Received. Plans Approved.—The Public Works Department wrote approving of the plans and specifications for forming the Parakoko road, and also for the Waihohono road. The chairman's action in letting a contract for the Parakoko road was approved. Mairoa Road.—Mr D. L. Mackenzie wrote requesting that the road should be repaired near Mr Dunn's property.* —-Cr O'Dwyer said the road in question was an extremely dangerous place and horses were°continually getting bogged. 'Suppliers to the Pio Pio factory could not get their cream to the factory unless some steps were taken to make the road passable. —Cr O'Dwyer was instructed to expend up to £lO in repairs. Oakura Road. —A number of settlers on the Oakura road petitioned to have the road graded as soon as possible.— Cr Gregg said the road required grading immediately, and it was decided that as soon as the weather permitted the grader would be sent. General Rate.—lt was decided to strike a general rate of one penny in the £ throughout the county. Mahoenui-Kawhia Road. —Cr Were was authorised to expend £B, thirds accrued on Mr Verry's sections, for putting in a culvert. Caves Road.—Cr Johnston said that in view of the fact that the contractor had no intention of clearing the slips on the Caves road, he thought the council should terminate the contract.—The engineer was instrutced to estimate what amount was necessary to complete the contract. Pungarehu Bridge.—A number of settlers on the Pungarehu road petitioned the council in respect to a bridge over the croek at the five-mile peg, and for repairs to the road. The petitioners stated they understood a balance of the grant to the amount of £64 was still available, and this, togetl with thirds, would probaby be suuoient. —It was resolved that the clerk make enquiries as to whether the grant could be used for building the bridge. If so, the engineer to report io next meeting.
