MAROKOPA.

Own Correspondent,

The weather during the past week has been of a very boisterous nature. Strong winds have prevailed and accompanied occasionally by showers.

The matter of a medical asociation in the district has been a subject that has been under discussion for some consideiable time, and with the result of recent events as regards sickness there ia every possibility of the matter being dealt with in a serious nature. A petition issued by Mr John Wouldes to the Minister for Public Health is now going the rounds, and is being largely supported. The Minister is asked to grant a £2 for £1 subsidy for the purpose of medical aid to the residents of the Awakino County and contiguous districts. The proposition is to have a trained nurse Btationed at Marokopa and a doctor if possible. The petition points out that there ia approximately a population of 300 including Maoris to care for, and that the isolation of the district from where medical aid can be procured is not only very costly, but owing to the long distance over which doctors have to travel serious results might take place. There has been a great deal of sickness in the district during the past two months in which time five deaths have taken place, three being young children. It is Mr Woulde's intention after getting a number of signatures of guarantee—£l per year—and those who wish to donate, to hold a public meeting and go into the whole question. There is little doubt but the project will receive strong support, as it is an absolute necessity for the district. It is anticipated that the Marokopa Co-op. Dairy Co. will commence operations in a few weeks' time. A very large increase of supply is expected and the directors are very hopeful of the outlook of the coming season.
