ST. LUKE'S LADIES' GUILD.
On Thursday afternoon a number of ladies met in St. Luke's Church Hall in response to an invitation from the working members of the Ladies' Guild. All listened with great pleasure to musical items ably rendered by Mrs Jones (Otaki) and to songs by Miss Handyside and Mrs Bennett. Afternoon tea was then handed round after which the annual report of the guild was read by the president. During the past year the sum of over £BO was raised, of which £SO was given towards the extinction of the debt on the hall. It is hoped that a much larger sum may be raised this year by a bazaar and garden fete to be held, probably, in January, and all the ladies belonging to the congregation were earnestly invited to help in this effort either by becoming members of the guild, working or subscribing, or by making articles for the bazaar. A very generous response was made by some of the ladies at the conclusion of the meeting. Thanks were then given to the performers who had so kindly contributed to the afternoon's enjoyment, to the secretary, Mrs Hitchcock, and assistant secretary, Miss Downes, and reference was made to the loss the guild had sustained by the death of Mrs F. W. White. The Rev. E. S. Wayne spoke very warmly of the services rendered to the church by the ladies, and confidently hoped that this year an ever greater success would crown their efforts.
