♦- , Newton King reports :—■ a At Stratford on August 20th, at my r fortnightly cattle sale, I had a good entry and a large attendance of the , public, including buyers from the Wajkato. An advertised special entry from Mr R. H. Phillips of 450 coloured : yearlings and 2 year empty heifers, came forward in excellent condition, being sold without reserve after good competition at the following rates:— Holstein 2 year empty heifers £5 to £5 lis, yearling Holstein heifers £3 116s to £4 6s, yearling Holstein heifers £3 IGs to £4 6s, yearling Jersey heifers, best £4 10s to £5 Is, others £3 15s to £4 ss. Several lines of empty heifers were yarded on account of other vendors, selling after spirited competition. Best yearling heifers made £3 12s to £4, others 36s to 53s 6d, yearling steers 47=) 6d to 535, 18 months steers £3 12s, 2 year steers good £4 to £4 10s, empty Jersey Holstein heifers £4 18s to £5 6s 6d, good grade £3 19s to £4 10s, mixed yearlings 39s to £3 according to quality, bulls £2 12s to £4 store cows £2 18s to £3 15s 6d, good forward cows £5 to £5 16s, fat cows in demand at £6 10s to £7 2s, small 2 year heifers in calf £3 10s, fat bullocks £8 2b. I had a good entry of dairy cattle in my springing heifer yards, about 150 being yarded. Best quality cows realised from £8 10s to£Jl, others £5 15 to £7 15s, springing heifers, best £7 5s to £9 10s, others £5 2s 6d to £6 ss. In my Stoney River yards on the August 22nd, I had a very heavy entry of cattle including about 450 head of mixed yearlings. Buyers were present in good numbers from all part
of Taranaki and created an excellent demand for all classes. All store
I cattle were cleared during the day. The sale commenced with the yearling cattle, the whole of which were sold under the hammer. Prices realised were:—Store cows £2 lis to £3 14s 6d, forward cows £4 4s to £4 10s, fat cows £5 13s, mixed yearlings, good £2 9s 6d to £2 16s, poor 29s 6d, best yearling heifers £3 8s 6d to £3 17s, grades £2 4s 6d to £2 16s (id, yearling steers, best £2 8s 6d to £2 18s 6d, small 41s to 425, empty 2 year heifers, Jersey-Holsteins £4 16s 6d to £5 5s 6d, grades £3 18s to £4 Bs, 20 months to 2 year steers £3 14s to £4 ss, bulls 49s 6d, springing hei-
fers, choice £7 2e 6d to £S 17s 6d
others £5 10a to £7, dairy cows best up to £l2 15s, aged £4 5s to £6 10s. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report:— At Ohaupo on August 27th, we yardpd 763 head of cattle, which nearly all sold under good competition. We quote:—Fifteen to 18 months old steers £3 15s, yearling steres £2 16s to £3 lis, yearling heifers £2 19s 6d to £3l 2s, for Jersey cross, mixed yearlings £2 17s 6d to £3 5s 6d, fat cows £6 ss, forward cows £4 to £5, springing heifers £6 to £8 2s 6d, dairy cows £5 10s to £lO. At Te Kuiti on August 28th 58 head of cattle came forward. There was a good demand for steers 2 year old and upwards and dairy heifers, but young cattle were dull of sale. Prices : Two and a half year steers £4 19s to £5 ss, year steers £4 4s, mixed yearlings £2 14s to £2 16s, fat cows £6 ss, store cows £3 17s Gd to £4 lis, according to condition, springing heifers £6 2a 6d to £7 Is, backward heifers £4 7s 6d to £5 ss, dairy cows £7 to £9, woolly hoggets 14s lOd fat ewes IGs 6d. At Hamilton on August 29th, fat and store cattle, sheep and pig were, nenned in good numbers, Prices — Small fat steers £S ss, small fat heifers £4 16s to £5 7s 6d, mixed yearlings £2 15s to £3, 18 months to 2 year heifres £3 18s to £4 6s empty cows £4 to £4 6s, springing heifers £7 5s to £7 10s, springing heifers more backward £4 10s to £5 10s, dairy cows £6 to £9 15s, fat ewes 16s 7d to 17s 6d, wethers 265. Fifty pigs sold under keen competition, with an unsatisfied demand, porkers 36s to 435, slips 18s to 225.
