A CURIOSITY OF THE UPPER AIR. The reported drying up of lakes in Switzerland, Germany, Russia, and has led to the suggestion that the earth is becoming dessicated, and an odd German theory is that the ultra-violet rays of sunlight are concerned in the process. These rays slowly decompose water into hydrogen dioxide and hydrogen, the,, latter, but no oxygen, being evolved. The action taking place in the air, hydrogen dioxide is found in rain, while the hydrogen rises, and at 62 miles constitute 99J per cent, of the atmosphere. This lightest of gases, moreover, is thought to be escaping into space. AN OPENING FOR HIM. The editor of this particular paper was busy. His temper is one of the best ; but he did not like the look of the seedy individual with the hair, who had invaded his sanctum unannounced. "Well ?" he snapped. "I should like to know," began the seedy one, with dignity, "is there an opening here ?" "There is," interrupted the editor, grimly. "An ingenious carpenter, foreseeing your visit, has provided an excellent opening. Turn the knob to the right, and mind you don't fall over-the mat as you go out." WOULD TAKE ON ANYBODY. The foreman was busy repairing some pipes, in the presence of a small crowd of onlookers. After a time one of them, stepping up to him, asked : "Any chance of a job, mister ?" "Yes," was the reply. "Can you run joints ?" "Run Joints !*' said the man, eagerly, slipping off coat and sitting down to take ofi his boots, "not 'arf! Yes, I'll run Joints, or any other bloke you've got on the job." TO-MORROW AND TO-DAY. They say "To-morrow never comes," An. adage oft deemed right ; But if to-morrow never comes, No end were to to-night. The fact is this, time flies so fast, That ere we've time to say, '"To-morrow comes''' —lo and behold I To-morrow. proy«» to-day.
