OTOROHANGA.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE,

Own Correspondent,

There was a good attendance at the meeting of the Otorohanga Chamber of Commerce at their monthly meeting on Tuesday. The president, Mr J. Willis, presided.

Resident Doctor. —■ Letters were read from doctors requesting particulars of the district, etc., and the mat ter was left in the hands of the executive. (The following day the executive received word that Dr Teeper has definitely decided to commence practice in Otorohanga. > Kawhia Railway.—Mr Jno. Ormsby reported upon his interview with the Minister of Public Works. He stated that the other delegates were anxious to go to Wellington to interview the Minister there instead of at Te Kuiti, as they considered they would receive more time. They interviewed the Minister for Public Works at Wellington on August 2nd, and discussed the matter fully. The Minister gave a courteous hearing, and a'definite promise to have a trial survey made from Kawhia to the Main Trunk in the near future. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Ormsby. Mails to Kawhia.—Mr Whyte drew attention to the fact that the Government were calling for alternate tenders for the mail from Kawhia to Otorohanga as the result of representations made by the Otorohanga Chamber of Commerce. It was fully recognised that it would be advantageous for Otorohanga, and also for the Kawhia people, as Otorohanga is the nearest Main Trunk township to Kawhia.

More Telephones.—Upon the suggestion of Mr Whyte the embers of the Chamber of Commerce are to point out the advantages of telephone communication with Otorohanga telephone exchange, and to try and induce the settlers along the Pirongia road to combine, and apply to the department to have telephones laid on. Apart from incidental conveniences the chief reasons are to be in quick communication with a doctor and also to save fruitless trips to the railway goods shed. As there are about twenty likely subscribers it was thought that a telephone bureau could easily be arranged for at some point on the Pirongia road.
