THE LIBERAL LEADERSHIP.
REFUSED BY SIR JOSEPH WARD' A well-attended meeting of the Liberal party was held on Thursday to deal with *be Leadership. It was unanimously resolved to offer the responsible position to Sir Joseph Ward who, however, declined it with an expression of appreciation of the confidence reposed in him. The meeting resolved to meet at a later date, when an executive committee will be elected to carry on the party's business. In coming to this decision the Linerals are following quite a recent precedent, the interval between Sir Wm. Russell's resignation of the Reform party's leadership and the appointment of Mr Massey in 1903 having been similarly led. It is understood that the party is in a thoroughly sound and compact state and that no further accessions to the Government ranks at its expense need be expected.
