FOOTBALL.
WAIPA 5 v. MANIAPOTO 0. The above representative match was played at Te Awamutu on Saturday last. Waipa kicked off and play was taken to vhe Manaipoto 25. Mahar relieved with a line kick. Waipa again attacked, and forced the Visitors. The Maniapot'i forwards carried play to tha Waipa 25, S. Clark marked. D. Gray had an unsuccessful 3hot at goal. Waipa forwards, with D. Thompson in the lead, rushed for the visitors' line. Matthews relieved and cleared, with a fine line kick. Maniapoto forwards got goinpr, and by degrees carried play to the Waipa 25 where the local team was compelled to foice. Maniapoto pressed for some time. P. Turner got possession, and raced for the line but was unable to get over. The first spell ended without score. From the kick off the visitor pressed the Waina team but seemed unabie to cross the line. A free-kick to Waipa relieved them. Play was taken to the visitors' line when they were compelled to touch down. Richardson, Waipa, was frequently noticeable for clever work, and was a tower of strength to his side. P. Turner frustrated a strong forward rush and found the line. A free kick to Maniapoto took play to half-way. The visiting forwards, with Symea and Kite in the lead, gained ground. The Waipa backs with a passing run crossed the visitors' line but were called back. D. Gray broke away with the ball at toe, and relieved ths pressure. The visitors were again compelled to touch down. Half-time was called without score.
On resuming play, 3. Clark with ball at toe, took play to the Waipa 25. Richardson received, and found the line at half-way. Give-and-take play at mid-field followed. The Maniapoto forwards, Symes and Mexted leading,, again took play to Waipa 25. A nise passing run opened by Maher to Clarke to P. Turner, nearly ended in a score, the latter player being pushed into touch when &U but over the line. C. Clifford got posseasioti kicked over the Maniapoto backg. followed up well, and scored. The shot at goal was successful. Waipa 5, Maniapotu nil. Shortly after the commencemnt of the last spell the Waipa backs carried play, with a passing run, to the visitors' territory, where P. Turner saved wall. Matthews and Maher responded with a run to the Waipa- 25. The Waipa forwards forced play back into the visitors' 25, where Clifford again nearly crossed ths line. But for sound defence on >the part of the Maniapoto backs a further score would have been added. Ki'lop relieved with a line kick, which took play to half-way where it remained until time was called. Mr McKay refereed.
NOTES ON THE GAME. The game wan a fast and hard one. The Waipa forwards were better in the scrums, but in loose play the Maniapoto men showed to advantage. All the local forwards played well, and among their backs Richardson and C. Clifford were noticeable. Richardson was a tower of strength to his side, being prominent both in attack and.defence.
Among the Maniapoto forwards Symes and Holden worked hard, and were always on the ball. Among the backs S. Clark, at half, played a splendid game; whether on the defence or attacking, he was always brilliant. Peter Turner played a sound game and Killop was safe at full-back.
As a curtain-raiser to the above match the Otorohanga seniors met and defeated the Te Awamutu seniors by 3 points to nil. W. Clarke scored. The game was a fast, and even one throughout. Mr Burke, of Otorohanga, refereed.
