JAPANESE ELECTION METHODS.
Little ny little details of the recent election fight are coming to hand from the provinces, states a Reuter's message to the London newspaper, and it must be allowed that the usual crop of scandals is far smaller than ever before. At the same time there have been regrettable incidents. At Wakamatsu an affair of quite an extraordinary nature took place. Mr Kusaha, a Sei-yu-kei candidate, left no stone unturned to obtain his final success. After bribing the postal officials to hold up all correspondence intended for his opponent he corrupted the rjolice into arresting as many of the enemy's canvassers as possible on charges of illegal treating. On the day of the election he armed his own canvassers with revolvers ar.d held up the polling booths, his minions using gentle persuasion to see that all electors voted straight, Mr Kusaha was returned by a considerable majority.
