The present shortage of cattle which is being experienced is due to various causes, among which is the fact that a large amount of new country is coming in which has to be stocked, while farmers have been killing off a lot of their calves and in for pork rearing, which they find more reproductive. Another reason is that a large number of farmers further south are going in for cheese making instead of butter and having no skim milk, they find it unprofitable to rear calves. —Waikato Times.
