LONDON WOOL SALES.

AN ALL-ROUND RISE. London, August 3rd. The wool sales have closed. The competition was spirited, but slightly irregular. Top prices were not always realised owing to the miscellaneous selection offered. During the sales 147,500 bales were sold to Home buyers, 71,000 to Continental buyers, 18,000 to United States buyers, whilst 2,800 have been held over.

As compared with the May sales combings and merinos have been from sto 7i percent, higher; short wools, from par to 5 per cent.; medium and crossbred, 7£ per cent.; and inferior 5 per cent, higher. Scoured has declined from a halfpenny to a penny per pound. Slipes are unchanged. Good merino lambs are from 5 to 7J per cent, higher. Faulty is slightly in the sellers' favour. Crossbreds are unchanged. The market prospects are good. The following prices were realised yesterday for the fleece portions of the clips named Mangamahu, top Iljd average 9§d; Tarndale, top I id, average iod; Langridge, top iod, average 9§d; Mahia, top iod, average BM.

HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. Wellington, Saturday. The following reports in regard to the London wool sales have been received from the High Commissioner's Office: — " The wool sales have closed with a good demand for all descriptions. The sales have not been affected adversely on account of the continuation of the strike. There was a good demand. The American demand was especially good for crossbreds in good condition. Trade is good for Home and the Continent, and prospects are favourable. Some 17,000 bales of New Zealand wools were held over. Estimated values are as follows: —Superior merino, is to is 2d; medium 9id'to IldJ; inferior,/id to 9d; fine crossbreds of all grades, Is to Is 2id; medium crossbreds, gid to I Id; coarse crossbreds, 8d to I Id.
