AUSTRALIA V. ENGLAND. BAD WEATHER FOR SIXTH TEST. ENGLAND 203. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Oopyrißtit London, Monday. The sixth test match of tho triangu* lar series, between England and Australia, was started at Manchester today. The weather was wet and boisterous, and the pitch was so saturated after three days' rain that play could not be commenced until 2.45, when tin pitch was still soft. The teams were as follow : England. Fry, Spuoner, Foster, Hobbs, Rhodes, E. J. Smith, Woolley, J. W. Hearne, Hitch, Haigh, Barnes. Australia. ■ — Gregory (captain), Bardsley, Mayne, Jennings, Macartney, Kelleway, Emery, Whitty, Mat thews, Hazlitc and Catkeek.
A SLOW START. Fry won the toss from Gregory, and decided to bat first, opening with Hobbs and Rhodes, the usual pair, to the bowling of Hazlitt and Whitty. The ball was greasy, and sawdust had to be used. Runs came slowly, and from the first six overs onlv eight runs were scored. The fielding was smart, and this helped the bowlers to keep down tho runs. Twenty-five runs were scored in an equal number of minutes, and at 37 a break-back from Whitty beat Hobbs, who had scored 19. One for 37. Spouner vves the incomer, and after scoring a single played one into his wicket next over. Two for 39. Fry filled the vacancy, and Macartney injuring himself slightly while fielding, retired, MacLaren fielding substitute.
Fry scored two runs in 20 minutes, and a leg-bye brought up the half century in G5 minutes. The batsmen coull not do anything with Whitty on the difficult wicket, while they would only get Hazlitt away for occasional sing! us. The first bowling change was tried at 60, Kelleway going on for Hazlitt. Fry, when four, was nearly taken at short leg by Whitty in Kelleway's first over.
Rhodes began to brighten up, and Fry reached 1!) before hitting one from Matthews up to MacLaren. Three for 83. HEARNE HAS TWO LIVES.
Fry made two fours in one over from Kelleway. He reached double figures in 50 minutes and was caught at long off. Hearne was the incomer, and after making a single was badly missed by Whitty at mid-on, arid in the next over by Matthews. Hazlitt replaced Kelleway at 89, Hearne kept up his wicket while Rhodes was scoring. The century was reached in 125 minutes, Rhodes batting more freely. Ho got 53 after 130 minutes.
Emery replaced Matthews at 110, and Rhodes was twice nearly run out, Bardsley and Matthews returning promptly. Hearne, after batting fifty minutes, was yorked by Hazlitt for 9. Rhodes, 75, was enterprising, the late cut being his most prolific stroke. Four for 140.
Woolley filled the vacancy, and 150 was hoisted for IGS minutes. Whitty replaced Emery at 154, and got Wolley caught at fine leg. Five for 155.
Foster followed and Matthews relieved Whitty at 173. Foster was taken off a skier. He was nearly caught by Whitty at mid-on off Hazlitt before he had scored. Rhodes, 88, was now batting cautiously. Six for 175.
Smith was the incomer, and he and Rhodes played out time. Rhodes was in 220 minutes, and played admirably. He gave one chance to Hazlitt off Whitty before he had scorad. Macartney is suffering from a chill. A total of 4500 paid for admission. Following are the scores: ENGLAND—First Innings.
