OHURA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the above Council was held in the Council Chambers on July 24th. Present Crs Loveday (chairman), Risk, Goldfinch, Sowry, Sandison, Lvon and Currie. Ohura Debating Club.—Application was made to have the use of the Council Chambers for the meeting of the club. —Declined. Crown Lands, Waitaanga. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote as follows:—In reply to your letter of the 2nd inst., re survey of Crown lands at the back of Mangaroa, I may state that it was intended to start Mr Larkin at that, as intimated at Mangaroa. However, by the time he had finished at Mokau and in consequence of a few small surveys on the Waitewhena road requiring to be done, it was decided to wait till the spring before starting surveys in the Waitaanga district. I may say that I am doing the best I can to get the Crown land surveyed and as it is only to do one thing at a time I have often to defer some surveys to get more pressing work done. Traffic By-laws. —Messrs Broadfoot, Finlay and Metcalfe wrote notiying the Council that Messrs J. Dean, C. Kelly and E. Pawson were fined £1 each for having bullock teams on the roads during prohibited months.
Waikaka Road.—A letter was received from the Under-Secretary re this road as follows:—I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 4th ult., conveying a resolution passed by the Ohura County Council to the effect that it cannot entertain the offer of £350 £1 for £1 made by thi3 department for erecting bridges and culverts on the Waikaka road and in reply have to state that the question will be further considered when the Public Works Estimates are being compiled this session.
Claim for Damage.—H. Rait wrote claimine £SO damage through being thrown frm his horse on the Whenuakura road through the cutting on the road being left unfenced and unlighted. —Resolved that claim be not entertained.
Application for Magistrate's Court. —This matter is under consideration by the Minister of Justice. P.W. Department wrote re waste of pubilc money in the Ohura County, as follows: —Referring to your letter of the 18th of May in which complaint was made as to the manner of carrying out road work in the Matiere township, have to state that due inquiry has been made into the matter by the inspecting engineer of this department as promised, and from the evidence obtained by him it appears there was some ground for complaint. As a result of the engineer's investigation of these and other matters it has been decided to make a change of administration of road work in the Te Kuiti sub-district, and it is hoped that there will not in the future be any further complaint.
Kakahi Road Bridge.—A report has been received that as the County Council has erected a temporary bridge suitable for stock the engineer has made a request for a sum sufficient to erect a permanent bridge which will be considered in preparing this season's Estimates.
Toroto Road.—A grant of £l2O will be made available for extending dray road so as to complete the work. Tokirima Loan.—The board is prepared to entertain £2835 as the amount available fur this Work. —Resolved that the loan be proceeded with.
Waitaanga Thirds The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote that there was a credit of £29 10s of thirds available on the sections transferred from the Clifton County to the Ohura County. Agricultural Show Ground.—Application was made to the Minister to substitute section 12, block 3, Ohura, in lieu of section 28, block 2, Ohura. Moved by Cr Lyon that the Commissioner of Crown Lands be reauested to furr.ish enough money to fell all the bush in the Matiere reserve. Cr Lyon explained that it would obviate the danger that would occur if parts only were felled through firing. It Tiad occurred in the Mangaroa that a portion of bush was left and when eventually felled the ranger would not take the responsibility of burning owing to the adjoining buildings.
Wash - out on the Tongaporutu Road. Resolved that the Public Works Department be requested to have the work attended to. Finance Committee. —Moved by Cr Sandison and Kelly that Crs Risk, Lyon and the chairman form the finance committee. An amendment moved by Crs Currie and the chairman that Crs Risk, Goldfinch and the chairman be the committee was lost and the motion was carried. It was decided on the motion of Cr Currie that £l5O be spent in cutting firewood to be in readiness to burn papa during the summer. j Turoto Road.—The engineer was instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of widening thn Turoto road. Metalling Main Road. Resolved that the Minister of Public Works be requested to have firewood cut between the 12 and 16-mile pegs for naDa burning and that he have a report from the inspecting engineer on the metalling of the Ohura road. Mokau-Ohura Road Metalling.—■ Resolved that the member for the district be asked to impress on the Minister the urgent need of having a definite answer as to granting of subsidy for metalling. Te Koura Road.—Moved by Crs Lyon and Sandison that the Minister of Public Works be urged to expedite the road to Te Koura and have it open to the puhlic. Resolved that the Minister of Justice be requested to station a constable at Ohura and Matiere.
