PROTECTING SHIPPING.

The Secretary for Marine, Mr G. Allport, in bis annual report, states that a vote of £IOOS was taken for a lighthouse at North Cape last year, and the lantern and apparatus have been ordered from England. A further vote will be asked for,this session in order that the erection of the tower, dwellings and other necessary buildings may be proceeded with. The light will be a second order incandescent group flashing white light, giving three flashes in quick succession every half minute. It iB proposed to install a fcg signal at North Cape when the lighthouse is erected. The erection of the tower for the lighthouse on Chicken Island is in hand, and the apparatus has been procured. The light will be an automatic acetone acetylene light, so that no keepers will be required. It will be a flashing light giving 18 flashes a minute., When the lighthouses on Chicken Island and North Cape ar« completed the coast from Cape Maria Van Dieman to Auckland will be very well lighted indeed, states the secretary- __________
