WATER SUPLY, FIRE BRIGADE, AND INSURANCE PREMIUMS.

To the Editor. Sir,—Some time ago our local representatives Te Kuiti Borough Council, approached the ratepayers with loan proposals for various purposes. We were given to understand that, should certain monies be granted we would have greater security from fire in our town, and would also receive a large reduction in our insurance premiums, as a result of having an efficient water supply, and up-to-date fire appliances. The monies were granted, and to all appearances are already spent and I notice the rates have been struck for the interest on loans. Aa most of our business people have to pay anything from 30s upwards for premium on every £IOO insurance on their properties I consider it is up to our council to supply the Fire Underwriters' Association with proof that the amount of money spent by the ratepayers warrants a reduction of premium. lam aware that bofore the insurance companies will lower their premiums they have to be satisfied that a reliable water supply,up-to-date fire appliances, and an efficient fire brigade exist. We have provided a lot of money for these purposes and, except what the man about the street has to say, we have no guarantee that matters are in a very satisfactory position. As it is mooted that a further loan is wanted shortly it is hoped that the Fire Underwriters' Association will be approached without delay. If lam not mistaken such a report would cause some unaasinesß and disastisfaction in our midst. Before committing the ratepayers to borrowing any more money irr any purpose whatever, the matters referred to should be 'carefully looked into. Aa the interests of every rateoayer are affected I trust some abler pen than mine will help the cause through the medium of your valuable columns.—l am, etc., - _ SMOKE.
