King Country Chronicle SATURDAY, JULY 6, 1912 MR MASSEY'S OPPORTUNITY.

The Huspenfle under which the country has lain since the Mackenzie Ministry was formed is ended at last, and a decisive defeat has been registered against the Cabinet, which assumed the reins of Government handed over by the Ward Administration. Whether the defeat of the Government means a great victory for Mr Maßsey remains to be seen. So many unpledged members have seats in the House that it is extremely difficult to forecast any political event at the present time. The fact remains, however, that Mr Massey has at last achieved the highest goal of political, ambition He is granted the opportunity of framing a Cabinet and placing a policy before the country. It is extremely questionable if those members who voted against the Mackenzie Government will strictly adhere to the standard of Mr Massey and there is a very general feeling that another election will be held in the not distant future. It has-been persistently rumoured that another election is certain to take place before the end of next year. The fact that an election within two years of the previous general election would mean that no local option poll would be taken for a further term of three years, thus giving the Trade security of tenure for a period of five years instead of three, is taken by many to have a significant bearing upon the life of the any Ministry which may be holding office by the narrowest of margins. That such influences should be able to affect Governments is a striking plea in favour of some radical change in the methods of establishing a Cabinet. The more one seeß of the ramifications of party Government the greater apnears the necessity for its abolition in favour of a system consonant with the requirements of the country. In the meantime Mr Massey has his opportunity.. It is to be sincerely hoped he will be given the chance to carry into effect some of the reforms which he has so long and persistently urged upon the country.
