FOOTBALL.

WAIMIHA 3 v. MANGAPEHI 0.

The Mangapehi team journeyed to Wairoiba on Saturday last,, and played their second round match on the latter's ground. 'The match was fought out in the best of good feeling. The game was very fast and resulted in a win for Waimiha by 3 points (one unconverted try) to nil. Mangapehi won the toss and defended the eastern goal. The first spell fairly even, attack and counter attacks taking the ball very rapidly from one end of the field to the other. Mangapehi got the most of the ball from the scrums, and Brumby, as balf, gave his backs plenty of work to do. Good tackling by the Waimiha backs, however, nullified all the efforts The spell ended with no score. On changing round both teams made determined efforts to score, but it was not until one of the Waimiha forwards broke away with the ball at toe, that the line was crossed. No goal resulted — Waimiha .3, Managapehi 0. The Mangapehi players now made determined efforts to score, but the attack always seemed to break down right on the opponents' goal line. Player after player picked up the ball and hurled himself at t'he line, but the defence was too sound. Brumby, the Mangapehi half, put in some specially good work at this stage, and was within an ace of being over several times. Waimiha gradually forced play down j to midfield, where the game ended with the score—Waimiha 3, Mangapehi 0. For the winners G. Sturmey. .as balf, was a host in himself. The.other backs were very solid in defence, and tile forwards all worked hard. For Mangapehi ail/ played well, with perhaps J. Reid, Cbarteris and Dobson as more prominent than the rest. An unfortunate incident was that the referee ordered J Moonev, a Mangapehi forward, off the field for obstructing an opponent. Mr Kemp, of Waimiha, was referee. MANIAPOTO RUGBY UNION. A committee meeting of the above union was held in the Chronicle office last evening. The Kaeaea and Pio Pio clubs forwarded their affiliation fees to the Maniapoto union.
