Spooner filled the vacancy. In Nourse's second over he survived two appeals from leg-before. Spooner relished the bowling, and in hitting hard, split his bat. He retired to get a new one. Pegler bowling splendidly, beat Spooner twice with leg breaks, hut the ball missed the wicket.
The batsmen were run-stealing, and Rhodes' wicket was thrown down by Taylor, but he reached the crease just in time.
