HANGATIKI.

Own Correspondent,

A meeting of the Hangatiki and surroundnig district farmers was held at Mr A S. Board's residence on Tuesday.last to consider the advisability of erecting a cheese factory at Hanagtiki. Mr Board occupied the chair and a gocd number of local farmers were present, including Mr William Poole, expert cheese manufacturer, Messrs Gadsby, Te Kuiti, Self Bros., Hyde Bros. W. Knauf, 11. Clarke, L.'j. Reynolds, Sutherland, B. Board. It may be mentioned in tho first place that some very well known Taranaki farmers have lately been visiting the district and have been much impressed by the quality and adaptability of the land here for cheese production, and in view of this Mr A. S. Board has been of late in communication with Mr W. Poo'e, an expert cheese manufacturer. Mr Poole considers this part of the country an ideal district for dairying. A proposal to erect a cheese factory here was put to the meeting as follows:—"That he, Mr Poole, is prepared to erect an up-to-date cheese factory at Hangatiki, supply plant, rolling stock and pasteuriser, and everything required for making first-class cheese for the London market, absolutely free, and all the remuneration he wants to carry on the factory is Id per lb on all cheese made; ho will run the factory and make the cheese, delivering same f.0.b., Hangatiki."

The larmers guaranteeing 400 cows for five years is the only clause that binds the farmer in any way. They will have full .power of disposing of the cheese to suit themselves, full control of all financial matters appertaining to the disposal of their product, and a right to purchase the factory outright at arbitration valuation after five years. If all the present cream suppliers would supply to the cheese factoryover 500 cows could be guaranteed. Considering that, cheese pays a much bigger percentage than butter and with this splendid offer of a free factory the land value would immediatley increase. It is needless to say the proposal is being deeply considered.

Another meeting will be held at Mr
