TARANAKI LAND BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Land Board was held last week, I there being present the Commissioner of Crown Land (Mr G. H. Bullard, in the chair), Messrs Heslop, Rattenbury, McCluggage and Kennedy. The Commissioner reported f hat he had been advised that Mr Rattenbury had been reappointed a member of the board. The Commissioner conveyed to the members oE the board the thanks of the Under-Secretary and SurveyorGeneral for their congratulations on their recent promotion. TRANSFERS. Public Trustee (administrator of J. P. Flett, deceased) to Annie Flett, section 25, block 15, Aria' —-Approved. W. Innes to H. McGrath, section 1, block 3, Totoro. —Deferred for further particulars and report of ranger. One month's extension of time in which to register the following transfers was granted:—C. E. H. Allen to P. Collyer, section 30, block 2, Ngatimaru, and section 13, block 1, Ngatimaru; and R. H. Allen to P. Collyer, section 1, block 1, Ngatimaru. SUB-LEASES. The following applications for permission to sub-lease were approved:— E. Holloway to S. 11. Barnitt, section 2, block 1, Aria; R. Scott to S. W. Shaw, part section 2, block 8, Mimi; J. B. C. and R. G. Faulkner to C. FMarsh, sections 170 and 172, block 13, Pouatu. Applicationonns were made to register the following transactions :—D. R. Hight to G. J. O'Neill, sections 74 and 76, block 14, Pouatu; W. F. L. Jenkins to J. and J. J. Embling, part section 31, block 11, Ngaere; W. F. L. Jenkins to A. 7: ' n eran part section 31, block lere; A. C. Marr to A. E. Licti., f..., section 4, block 4, Huiroa. It was resolved to grant one month's extension in all cases except A. C. Marr, where two months' extension was granted. THE FREEHOLD. Applications for the freehold were received as follows: — Annie Goxhead, section 15, block 15, Pouatu. —Approved. F. C. Coxhead, subsection 2, section 68, block 14, Pouatu. R. Corbett, subsection 1, section 69, block 14, Pouatu. 11 was resolved in connection with the two latter applications that Mr H. T. Twis3 be appointed appraiser fur tne valuation of the fee simple. SURRENDER. A. Cameron applied to surrender section 4, block 8, Upper Waitara, owing to want of access, and for a refund of part of the rent paid in advance.—Consideration was deferred. OPERATION OF THE LAND ACT. The Commissioner informed the board that section 129 of the Land Act, 1908, could not be legally operated to give additional land to selectors of adjoining areas; also that under section 128. Messrs J. Phillips and G. W. and H. J. Woods, whose holdings exceeded 640 acres were ineligible to take up more land, and H. and G. Blank, who held 533 acres, to take up an additional 150 acres. It was resolved th?t road access ne provided, and the land opened for public competition. ARREARS OF RENT. The Commissioner submited a ichedule of tenants two or more payments in arrear, with their rent as at April 30th, and it was agreed that all Dwing three instalments be placed in the hands of the Crown Solicitor for recovery, an.l that those owing two instalments be notified that it is intended to sue for the amounts owing. RANGERS' REPORTS. E. Tolme, Crown lands ranger, reported that J. Carter had been residing on section 2, block 11, Aria, for some time past.--Satisfactory. He also reported that Mrs D. H. Wille was not residing on section 6, block 11, Ohura.' —Resolved the selector hie given six months in which to reside or transfer. He further reported on the application of J. 11. Andreson for part section 10, block 7. Ohura, to give access to section 9. Resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the commissioner to arrange an exchange under section 12 of the Public Reserves and Domain Act, 1 908 He also reported on the application of R. F. Rath for part Wanganui River trust lands for a homestead site. ■ —Resolved that an area of 10 acres be granted to the applicant under section 128 of the Land Act, 1908, at .£5 per acre. He also reported that Coburn and Banfield were opening up a coal mine on section 8, block 5, Aria.-—Resolved to draw attention of the lesees that they have no right to commit waste by opening up mines on their leaseholds, and that the matter be referred to the department for advice. E. A. Meredith, assistant Crown lands ranger, reported on the application of J. A. Taylor for extension of time tc reside on section 20, block 12 Mapara —Resolved that the ranger's report be adopted.. Mr Meredith also reported on settlers non-resident in the Tangitu Improved Farm settlement: R. Glentworth, P. G. D. A. Guinan and R. F. Beautrais. —No action will be taken in regard to Glentworth, Beautrais' holding will be. forfeited, and Guinan granted a month's extension. E. Tolme. reported on then ispection of 18 holdings. Improvements required £1057 effected £8991. None were in default for residence or improvemnts. — Satisfactory. LOCAL BODIES. The following local bodies submitted proposals for expenditure of accrued thirds: — Patea County Council £72 16s Bd, Waiwakaiho Road Board 13s 5d. — Approved subject to the report of the ranger.

Taranaki County Council £55 K 4c] —Approved subject to consent of Oakura Road Board. Ohura County Council £4 !1 19s 2d. Approved. GENERAL. W. Ward applied for permission to exchange a portion of his section 10, block 16, Ngatiruanui, for a county reserve on the Tapunui road, and W. G. Maione applied for co::sen: to a small area of the section being taken for an approach to the Tnpuni road bridge.—The matter was left in the Commissioner's hands to deal with. E. A. Guilford, on behalf of the Tangitu settlers applied for a license with right of purchase of a piece of Crown lands at the junction of Mapiu and Otamati roads for a creamery site. —lt was decided to obtain a report from the ranger.

J. B. Norris, section 6, block 2, Omon a, applied for a part of the Matemateaonga forest reserve, to improve his fencing line.- It was re solved that in the event of the forest reservation being lifted the board would consider the request.

W. Sangster applied for a lease of section 27, bock 9. Totoro, a timber reserve formerly included in his section 27, block 9, Tooro.—The application was refused, and it was further decided that the land be offered under the optional tenure after valuation and report from the ranger. Rangitr. ;ra applied for a lease of a small island in Waitara river, the island to be kept clear of noxious weeds. —The application was left in the Commissioner's hands to make the best arrangements for a lease of the island.

A. E. Watkins applied for the closed part of Clifton road adjoining sections 1, 3, and 4, and parts 5 and 15, Pukearuhe district.—The application was agreed to. J. A. Carr, selector of section 52. block 4, Paritutu, applied for a grazing tenancy of section 50. —It was resolved that notice be given of the termination of the present tenancy.

J. F. Moorby applied for a lease of section 10, block 16, Pouatu, and it was resolved that th« Commissioner be requested to aprly for a vote for felling bush, with a view to granting a yearly tenancy of the land. C. M. Ross applied for a lease of section 38, block 14, Ohura. —The application was referred to the Commissioner.

J. Pedersen applied for a lease of a larger piece ot Moki township resevre than had been granted him.—The resident road engineer asked that no lease be granted whilst the Public Works Department had a use for the land.—The matter was left in the hands of the Commissioner.

E. Marfell applied to purchase part of the Omato road.—Resolved to leave the matter in the hands of the Commissioner to deal with upon a valuation being trade by the ranger. B. Speight applied for a timber license of part section 9, block 12, Ohura, for a period of six years.—lt was decided to recommend the granting of a license for four years. With reference to H. Kitchinguian's application to lease section 28, block 14, Cape, the Egmont County Council considered that the reserve would be required in the near future for a gravel supply, and that it should be leased only on a monthly tenancy. Under the circumstances it was resolved that no lease be granted. W. J. Coventry renewed his application for access to section 21, block 15. Aria,by opening a road through section 27.—The board could not see its \j*ay to make any recommendation. J. F. Corney applied for part of the road reserve, Okau road, fronting section 2, block 11, Waro,. —Resolved to obtain a ranger's report. The Public Works Department and the Ohura County Council advised that there was no objection to disposing of part of the Waitangatata road reserve applied for by T. Agang. It was agreed that necesary steps be taken to close the portion of the road applied for and dispose of it to the applicant. R. L. Wilson applied for a further extension of time in which to find a transferee for section 2, block G, Upper Waitara.- —Six months' further extension was granted.

A. Williams applied for a section of Crown land adjoining his section 2, block 11, Totoro.—-It was decided to inform applicant that the board intends to put the land up to the pubiic compeition, and that in any case he could not obtain more than about 30 acres.

G. F. Banfield, selector of section 34, block 1, Tangitu, applied for his ileense tto issue.—Agreed to. J. Maher, selector of section 3, block 15, Ohura, wrote complaining that there were only 50 acres felled and grassed instead of 105 acres. —■ Received.

The Ohura County Council applied for permission to take timber from Matiere township for the purpose of bruning papa. Agreed to subject to the ranger's supervision. J. J. Peacock applied for part laranui block adjoining his section 4, block 16, Aria. Refused. Mr Kennedy drew attention to the felling of bush bv the Public Works Department on section 84, block 10, Pouatu, in connection with the railway construction works. Resolved to request the department to refrain from causing any unnecessary damage to the forest on this section. A. Barnett, on behalf of L. R. Whitaker, applied for thirds from section 2, block 9, Aria, to be spent on Pura road. Resolved that the board sees no reason to depart from is former decision.

A. and W. Goodwin Mole objecting to the thirds from their section being pledged in the payment of interest on Kapahi road loan. —The board advises the writers that their course is to lodge an objection under the Local Bodies Loan Act, and that the board will deal with the question of pledging the thirds when the application comes before it.

D. Teed applied to purchase closed part of Holdsworthy road adjoining part section 24, Grey district. —-Con-

siderution deferred to enable titles to adjoining lands to be inquired into. J O'Donovan applied for a renewable lease of part section 1, block 14, Waro. —Resolved to inform' him that the board cannot give him any other tenancy than a yearly one. The Commissioner brought up the question of access to section 255, Huirangi.—Resolved to offer it under the optional tenure, at a price to be fixed by the Commissioner, upon the ranger's report. The following settlers have not complied with the conditions of resident and improvemens:—H. Bryson, section 2, block 3, Mahoe, residence — granted three months' extension, final. A. Paulger, section 6, block 11, Cape, residence —satisfactory in the meantime. D. and J. Brosman, section 2, block 2, Mimi, reisdenca —deferred for furher inquiry. F. E. Leach, section 4, block 12, Aria, residence deferred for further inquiry. The Commissioner submitted a scheme of sections being surveyed for settlement in the Whakaihuwaka North block, Tauaukawa survey district, blocks 2, 3, and 4.—Resolved that the scheme be approved.

A plan of land part 196 H, required by the New Plymouth Borough Council in connection [with the Mangaotuku stream diversion, was laid on the table.—Resolved that the surrender of the existing lease be accepted, and a new lease issued from the remainder of the land, that the land required be disposed of to the borough council at a value proportionate to the area, and also that the small area of Crown land be sold at a proportionate value. P. Lloyd renewed his application for access to section 9, block 3, Aria. —Action already being taken with regard to this matter. Messrs Standish and Standish, solicitors, forwarded a plan of the proposed subdivision of section U and part V, New Plymouth.—Resolved that the scheme be approved. A. R. Standish applied for weekly tenancy of sections 572-573, New Plymouth.—Resolved that a weekly tenancy be granted at 13 per week rent.

The board considered tha matter of noxious weeds on section 25, Hua, and Waiwakaiho, occupied by H. F. Cane.—Resolvtd that the attention of the tenant be drawn to the matter, and that the ranger be asked for a report.
