WAITUNGURU.

Own Correspondent. A social was held in the hall on Thursday, May 30th. In spite of doubtful weather and the bad state of the roads, people from all round were present, and made the evening's entertainment successful both financially and socially. Songs were given by many of those present and were much appreciated. The catering by the ladies was, as usual, well attended to. Dancing commenced at S p.m. and was kept up till almost daylight. Nail driving competitions were held; Mrs R. Armstrong won the ladies' and Mr Harwood the gentlemen's. The guesainng competition was won by Andresen, Mr M. Andresen being second. It is expected that the hall funds will benefit to the extent of about £6 as a result. Mr E. Buckley spoke at some length on the benefit to the community conferred by Mr and Mrs A. Andresen by allowing the free use of a room in which school was held for a period of twelve months, there being at that time no hall, the alternative being a tent; an experience to which no one here wished to expose their children. A vote of thanks was proposed and the way in which it was responded to by the settlers present showed that their appreciation was intense and sincere. Three hearty cheers were given for the MG.'s. and Messrs Lindsay Bros., who had been instrumental in making this function so enjoyable.
