CHURCH OF ENGLAND, OTOROHANGA.
Own Correspondent. The first meeting of the newly app)inted committee of parishioners was held in the Church on Saturday last. The Rev. E. S. Wayne presided, and besides the curate (Rev. W. J. Piggot) there were present —Messrs a. Closey, G. Hawkins, C. Kidson, J. Ormsbj> junr., T. G. Hosking and W. H. V. Hall, secretary. The list cf subscribers to the church was carefully considered, and the collectors in the several districts were asked to do their best to place this matter on a definite and satisfactory financial basis by approaching all the parishioners in their several districts and ascertaining what amount each would feel prepared to annually subscribe to support the church work, and also at what times it would be most convenient to the subscriber to
be waited upon for the subscriptions. The committee decided to appoint Messrs Hawkins and Hall as collectors in the township. Mr Hosking was appointed treasurer, and the name of Mr W. H. Clarke was added to the list of members of the committee.
Vicarage Site. —■ A considerable amount of discussion took place on the question of making use of the vicarage site for the purpose for which it was intended, instead cf paying the ground rent for ihe sections as well as the rent of a house, which is the course adopted at present. It was felt that before anything further could be done, it would be necessary to acquire the freehold of these sections from the native owners. It was thereupon resolved that the trustees of the vicarage site be asked to take such steps as are necessary to acquire the freehold of the sections.
The matters of fencing is also to be attended to, the present fence being in a vsry dilapidated condition, and Rev. Piggot, and Messrs Hal! and Closey were appointed a committee to interview the owners of adiacent sections with power to act in the matter of erecting a good fence. The vicar raised the subject of supervision of the services at the church, and observed that it was most desirable that there should always be a member of the committee present at every service, such duty to be taken in turn. Three members of the committee thereupon offered to perform these duties, each member to officiate for a term of four Sundays. j The insufficient lighting of the church was referred tu by Mr Hosking who considered two good bracket lamps in addition to those in use should be obtained for the benefit of the preacher and the choir. He offered to present one himself if the other members would present the other which all members readily and cheerfully consented to do. It was decided to meet regularly in the church on the first Monday in each month, at'7.3o p.m.
