King Country Chronicle SATURDAY, MAY 18, 1912. PIO PIO METALLING SCHEME.
A significant feature of the discussion by local bodies on the proposed Local Government Bill is the prominence given to the question of roads. Entirely apart from the general aspect of the Bill or regardlesß of whether any contemplated change in local government is desirable or necessary the roads question is of such Vital importance to the country representative that it overrides all other considerations. To those possessing intimate knowledge of back block conditions such an attitude is the most natural thing in the world. In our own district the road question transcends all others -in importance as the sun outshines the stars, and that constant agitation exists in respect to roads is a strong indication that our settlers are alive to their necessities. As the outcome of the recent meeting at Pio Piu whereat the matter of metalling the roads was dealt with, a meeting has- been called by the councillor for Paemako riding to discuss the question. An opportunity is presented to those ratepayers who will attend the meeting to take such action as will lead to sound and lasting prosperity, and to cause their names to be handed down to posterity as men who deserved well of their country. On the other hand an opportunity may be afforded of delaying progress for a considerable time, and of causing their names to be handed down to posterity with a very differentt reputation. We have every confidence in our settlers; in their shredwness; their integrity of purpose and in their public spirit. These qualities combined with that liberality of mind which considers a neighbour sufficiently to compromise with him no the smaller issues, are all that are necessary to render next Tuesday's meeting memorablu in the district". That the opportunity will be grasped, and th 6 whole question dealt with in a large minded and tolerant manner is a perfectly safe assumption. As a result of the meeting there is little doubt that a scheme will be devised which will be acceptable to the ratepayers as a whole. If that much is accomplished those concerned will have every reason for congratulation. If less is accomplished further action should be taken until a definite scheme acceptable to the majority of those interested is arrived at.
