The Australians opened the first match of their tour against Notts in warm, cloudy weather. The wicket was soft and there was an attendance of 3000. Australia batted first and totalled 248, Macartney 84, Gregory 36, and Matthews 27. Nottß in their first innings scored 202 in 205 minute3—Gunn 33, Crawford 51, Iremonger not out 36. Whitty secured four wickets for 43, Hazlitt two for 82, Matthews one for 9, McLaren three for 22. Australia in the second innings totalled 165—Jennings 51, Gregory 42. Riley captured six wickets for 89. Notts in the second innings have scored 12 without the loss of any wickets.

SOUTH AFRICA v. DERBYSHIRE.

South Africa commenced the opening game against Derbyshire, and dismissed the County in the first innings for 45. The colonials replied with 126. In the second innings Derbyshire after losing eight wickets for 46, totalled 129—Warren 44, Sharp 29. The South Africans requiring 127 to win, scored 81 for thr&e wickets— Faulkner 40, Strieker 26.
