OTOROHANGA.
Own Correspondent
The election of the Otorohanga Town Council passed off very quietly on Wednesday last. About one half of the people on the roll exercised their privilege, and with nine candidates in the field they could make a choice. Of a total of 157 names on the roll 75 voted and two of those votes were informal. The following is the voting: V/. Vicary 65, T. Hosking Go, P. Gardiner 37, C. Elliott 36, Jno. Ormsby 31, C. Miller 30, J. Crean 28, H. Osmond 14, M. Cowley 12. The first five were declared duly elected, only two of them being members of the previous council. The Chamber of Commerce has received word that the Railway Department has given instructions to have the station connected by telephone with the local exchange in accordance with the request of the Chamber. This improvement will be greatly appreciated by the public all round, but particularly by people at, say, Iloriikiwi, who may be expecting goods or stock by rail. Mr Hewitt is at present relieving our postmaster, Mr Kidson, who has three weeks' holiday.
Mr W. Vicary caught a chill at the last Council meeting, and has been laid up with pleurisy and pneumonia, but I hear he i 3 now making a good recovery.
Bishop Crossley visited Otorohanga on Wednesday last and held a confirmation service, at which eleven came forward to be confirmed.
There is to be a meeting of creamery suppliers on May 2nd to discuss matters of interest. The manager of the New Zealand Dairy Association will be present.
