KIRITEHERE-MOEATOA.
Own Correspondent. A meeting of settlers took place at Mr L. Klein's on tho Bth inst., to discuss matters relating to dairying. It is understood that the Marokopa dairy factory will run a cart during the season if local settlers will gflraanfcee 100 cows. Under existing state of things settlers have to cart their cream lo Marokopa and pay launch freight to the factory—items which subtract heavily from tho monthly milk cheque. The chairman took a count on the word of those present, and allowing a few extra for modesty, decided that 100 cowa or thereabouts could easily be raised. He said he would look around for a director or two who would, without doubt, be willing to gather those present into the fold. Operations will commence next spring. A gang of men is busily employed erecting the Marokopa-Moeatoa telephone line. Direct telephone communication with Te Kuiti is what settlers desire. The benefits to be derived from such cannot be over estimated, and- any person trying to hang up telephone lines or block roads ought to be removed from decent society and placed upon the island of Taihoa. which is a seventh heaven to some people, and to native land legislation in particular. 1 hold that, a man should do all in bis power to advance his district. Local patriotism may be narrow, but it. is all " I'ro patria," and often far more useful than the "Gawd save the kmg" of a crowd a thousand miles bohinds the guns. There's alwayß a few to cry "stinking fish," and "it can't bo done," or "it will never j. ay the Government to do so and bo, or'such a thing." These gentlemen are usually messers with no eye at all for future interests. A man should not. hinder anything likely to be of public utility, because if the favour iB from the Government it will be grudgingly enough given. "Pro patria! Vale!"
