The High Commissioner'!? cable, dated London, April 11th, slates that the colonial wool sales have commenced. There is a large attendance of buyers, who show a disposition to operate very freely. The American demand is chiefly for light-conditioned coarse crossbreds. The market is firm for all descriptions at. .January rates, and prospects are lavourahle. A total of 120,,'UKl bales of New Zealand wool be available. The estimated of New Zealand wools at the close of the first series of colonial wool sales in London, held February 3rd, 1912, was as follows: —Superior merino 12d to 13Jd, medium merino 9£d to lid, inferior merino 7£d to 9d, fine crossbreds all grades lljd to 13£ d, medium crossbreds 8d to 10Jd, coarse crossbreds all grades 7d.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, Ltd., report:— At Ohaupo on 9th inst., we penned 3800 sheep and 550 head of cattle. Bidding was rather dull, especially on the cattle, but good business was done afterwards,and nearly ail stock sold at following rates: Fat ewes 10s 6d to lis, woolly lambs 7s 4d to 9s 7d, shorn .lambs 6s 3d to 6s 6d, 2 and 4 tooth wethers 12s 2d to 13s 6d, good sound-mouth ewes 9s 6d to 10s 6d, others 4s 2d to 7s 3d, small *2 tooth ewes 9s to 10s 6d, Romney rams 2gs, Lincoln rams ljgs, 2J to 3 year steers £5 to £5 ss, 18 months steers £3 6s to £3 lis, 2 year steers £4 10s, 15 months heifers £2 16s to £3 3s, store cows £2 10s to £2 15s, calves 25s to 30s, springing heifers £6 6s to £6 10s. A line of 130 Jersey heifer calves from Taranaki made from £2 12s to £2 15s, Holstein heifers £2 10s to £2 13s.

Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report:— At Ohaupo on 9th inst., we had a large yarding of sheep, but a small yarding of cattle. On account of the very wet day there was not a large attendance and bidding was dull. We quote—Good woolly lambs 6s 5d to 7s 9d, shorn lambs 3s 8d to 5s 2 tooth wethers 9s 7d to 12s 6d, ewes were not wanted and were dull of sale, yearling steers £2 ss. At Matamata on the 10th inst., we had a fair yarding of sheep and cattle. There was a large attendance and practically everything offered was sold. We quote—Good lambs 6s 7d. f.f.m. ewes 7s Bd, old ewes 4s, fat cows £4 19s to £5 2s 6d, forward cows £4 to £4 9s, empty cows £1 10s to £3 10s, 2 year heifers in calf £4 2s 6d, springing heifers £4 10s, cows near profit up to £6 10s, heifers with calves £7 2s 6ri, calves 7a 6d to 255, Shorthorn bull £5 16s, weaner pigs lis, porkers 28s, horse, sulky and harness £35, good buggy mare £6. At Hamilton on 11th inst., we had a good yarding. The attendance was large and bidding spirited, nearly all lines changing hands. We quote— Fat cows £5 12s 6d to £5 18s. fat heifers £5, forward cows £4 16s, forward steers £5 6s, 2 year heifers in calf £4 2s 6d to £4 ss, 3 8 month do. £3 Is, 15 month steers £3 Is, yearling steers £2 ss, calves 20s to 445, young bulls £2 to £4 ss, weighty bulls .£4 10s, springing heifers £4 103, fat wethers 13s tid to Ilia Sd, fat ewes 13s lid, forward ewes (is 7d, forward lambs 7s lOd, cull lambs 13s 6d, tobth wethers 10s, weaner pigs 5s to 18s, porkers IKs to 3"is, horse sulky and harness £22 10s.
