TE KUITI MAYORALTY.
PROSPECTS OF A CONTEST
The period for which the Mayoral office is held expires this month and nominations to fill the position will be received up to April 17th. With respect to the likelihood of a contest fur the Mayoralty taking place, the position is somewhat doubtful. Mr Boddie', the present Mayor, who has filled the position since the inception of the Council, when seen by a Chronicle representative, expressed himself as being averse to contesting an election for the position. A considerable time ago he had decided not to again accept nomination, but representations had been made to him of late from all quarters with a view to inducing him to accept office for another term. He had, however, a great deal of private business to attend to, and, having already served two terms, felt thattne position called for serious consideration. However, if the Council and the people were of opinion that hj? should continue in the position for another term he would reconsider hi 3 decision to stand down. He wished to make it clear that he did not want to make a contest for the Mayoralty. On this understanding, and if a deputy Mayor was appointed by the Council he would consent to be nominated.
Several other names have been mentioned a3 probable aspirants for the Mayoralty, but in view of Mr Boddie's announcement it is as yet uncertain whether the gentlemen whose names have been mentioned will accept nomination. However, it is definitely stated in certain quarters that a contest will eventuate.
