Mr J. fratt, a well-known Te Kuiti angler, paid another vsiit to the Mangaotaki stream last week and reports having again had good sport. He secured a basket of 14 fish which averaged four pounds, the biggest fish being sJlbs. Mr Pratt, who has had considerable experience of fishing ir: the Wairarapa district, especially in the Makuri Gorge, states that the Mangaotaki stream, although not carrying quite so many fish, is much better fishing ground, and predicts a great future for the stream. He also considers it an excellent place for sport as there is plenty of room for "playing" the fish, the pools being free from timber, and there are also plenty of good rapids. The fish are reported to be in splendid condition and are full of fight. Mr Pratt has been most successful this season with locusts and crickets, although he has used artificial flies and minnows. Fish in the Mangaoea-hae stream are not so plentiful this year owing to the heavy bush fires in the vicinity last season when a large number of fish were found dead. Mr Pratt caught several fish in that stream this season and reports them to be of good size and quality. He further added that he thought it would not be advisable to put any other fish in with the rainbow in King Country streams.
