SIR JOSEPH WARD A MEMBER.

In the House of Com mons to-day Mr Lewis Harcourt (Secretary of State for the Colonies) announced that the Imperial Trade Commission had been set up in termß of the resolution passed at the last Imperial Conference. He stated that the personnel of the commission was as follows: Britain. Lord Inchcape (chairman), Sir E. Vincent, Sir C. Owens, Sir H. Rider Haggard, Mr T. Garnett (Manchester), Mr W. Lorimer (Glasgow). Canada.—Mr G. Poster. Newfoundlan.l. —Mr Bowring. South.Africß.—Sir D. P. de Villierß Graaf. New Zealand.—Sir Joseph Ward. Australia. —Mr D. Campbell. Mr W. A. Robinson, of the Colonial Office, has ben appointed secretary.! Mr Harcourt expressed the hope that the inquiry would be concluded before the next Imperial Conference. NEW ZEALAND FIRST. It is understood that the Empire Trade Commission, the personnel of which is announced in to-day's cables, will meet in London first and arrange procedure. It may then visit New Zealand and Australia, taking the former firßt. Sir Joseph Ward, who is a member of the commission, will be unable to go to London for the first meeting. Sir Joseph Ward states that it is not his intention to retire from New Zealand politics aB a result of hiß appointment to the commission. He thinks the work will occupy about two years.
