NEW FACTS ABOUT IRON.
Some curious observations havt been made on the sounds given out by bars of iron on receiving a blow The intensity of the sound depends on temperature, and with increase oi the temperature the intensity dimin ishes until it reaches a vanishing point near the boiling temperature cl water (lOOdeg. C). On rising frotr 150deg. to a dull red heat, the sounc returns, reaching a maximum, and again falls off and ceases. The "extinction interval" depends upon th( proportion of carbon in the iron 01 steel. It is lOOdeg. to 150deg. foi pure iron, 95deg. to 145 deg. for lov carbon steel, and 85 deg. to 120 deg 'or high carbon steel. Steel, having a still higher percentage of carbon ;loea not. show the peculiarity.
