LIGHT AND FRUIT.
Some curious results have been observed in experiments made to ascertain the influence that light exercises on the development of fruit and grain. It would appear that light is absolutely necessary only during the Jirst stages of formation <>f fruit and grain. After this initial stage has been passed, the fruit set ins able to complete its development and maturity equally well in obscurity as in full light, although; under the influence, of the latter a geater amount of dry substance was acquired. It was observed that the best results were obtained when the growing fruit was under the influence of an attenuated light, and also that the acidity of the fruit was then diminished The experiment was made by letting the fruit mature (a) in bagß which shut but all light; (b) in transparent bags permitting an attenuated light; (c) fruit exposed to full daylight; and it was conducted on grapes, cherries, pears, apples, etc.
