MANGAPEHI SPORTS.
A GENERAL SUCCESS. Own Correspondent. The first meeting of the Mangapehi Club, affiliated with the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union and the New Zealand Axemen's Association, was held on Saturday last, under ideal weather conditions. There was a total absence of wind, and the competitors expressed themselves as well pleased with the track, which was in aa good order as a hardworking committee could make it. The efforts of the handicappers, Messrs Hill and Henderson, produced some close finishes, and the events were got off in good time. Mr Geo, Darlington, as starter, gave every satisfaction, the visiting runners saying that they could not wish for a better man with the gun. The secretary, Mr G. G. Hill, 5s entitled to a special word of praise, and his committee also, to whose efforts the success of the meeting was largely due. Close on 250 adults paid for admission to the ground, the sum of £lO 12s being taken at the gate. A pleasing feature is the fact that there will be a
balance of about £2O to carry on to next year's meeting. It is intended to endeavour to secure a lease of the ground, and put it injjUgood order_ for future gatherings.
