PLATFORM LECTURER'S AMUSING MISTAKE.

Some time ago a well-known lecturer was leaving' liis home to deliver an address, when he he had no handkerchief. He huiriedly went to the drawer where they were usually kept. Unfortunately, however, he took instead of an handkerchief a small baby's shirt of the very newest pattern. He had a brilliant audience that night, and being an authority on the subject, soon became very interesting. weather being warm, he took out his supposed pocket handkerchief to cool his face. He did not. quite understand the suppressed tetter he noticed going round the audience, but, tackling his Subject again, he showed more Plainly that his view was the correct one, and that the poor misguided creatures who - thought differently were greatly to be pitied. Here he tooit a drink of water, and was about to wipe his lips when loud laughter arose from all parts of the building. Whatever could it mean ? Had the poor misguided creatures he referred to organised an opposition to laugh him dt»wn, and thus obtain a victory by foul means where they could never succeed by fair ? So it seemed. But he would expose them. Strong in the strength of a righteous cause, he would' crush them to the dust, while the truth alone should win the day. So, advancing to the front of the rostrum, in loud and mighty tones he denounced their wild tactics, stamped his feet, struck the desk ; and still holding his handkerchief waved his hands on high, while shrieks of laughter filled the place. Quite nonplussed, he stopped again, but speedily solved the whole mystery by discovering that what he held in his hand was not a handkerchief but a baby's shirt.
