Mr Parr, Mayor, speaking at a meeting of friends in connection with his candidature for the Mayoralty, said local bodies could abandon the Arbitration Act and make arrangements outside the Act. The agreement with the Federation was unguaranteed as to permanence, and could tie broken a day after it was made. Lee; 1 .! bodies were opposed to strikes or (o their men boinj-T called out. because of some outside dispute wiih which they had no concern. 'The best saleguard against this was the Arbitration Act.
A ballot taken by the Auckland Waterside Workers on the question of joining the Federation of Labour resulted: —For, 273; against, I'.'T. The ballot regarding the canee'dim: of the union's registration under the Arbitration Act in order to aililiate with the Federation resulted in a majority of 33S in favour of federation.
