MAHOENUI.

Own Correspondent,

Last week nearly two hundred people held a picnic in Mr Old's paddock,. The weather being favourable a most enjoyable time was spent. During the afternoon a cricket match, Matal v. Mahoenui, was played. After a good game the match was won by Mahoenui. The younger people played games and ran races for which liberal prizes were given. An abundance of provisions were provided by the ladies. Ifwas the wish of all present that the affair should be made an annual one. The Education Board having purchased a site for a public school, the settlers are now about to erect a building thereon. A building that may be used for church services or entertainment. Upwards of £IOO has already been subscribed for the purpose. The weather is still very unsettled, and those who have bush to burn are having an anxious tie. The roads are no nearly as bad as they were through the last winter. It is the opinion of many that the weather is favouring those who are responsible for the continuous delays. Was there ever such an important work so long delayed? Seeing that nineteen-twentieths of our exports come from the land it is bad business that our roads should be so neglected. Sheep dipping is now in full swing. The sheep are looking well, and many of them could be frozen if the roads were good to drive on. The settlers are very pleased that a medical man will be located soon at Pio Pio, and a nur3e also when one is available.
