TE KUITI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Te Kuiti Borough Council was held on Monday evening. There were present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr Jas. Boddie) and Grs Lusk, Julian, Tammadge, Hardy, Young and Forsyth. N Mr N. C. Matthew wrote with reference to the formation of Ngatai strep t. —Received.
Mr H. A. Ellison wrote regarding the formation of the footpath in Jennings street. —Received. The Chief Engineer of Railways intimated that the portion of Rora street taken from the department wa3 duly gazetted. Electric Light Scheme. Mr S. Irwin Crooks wrote stating his charge for a report would be £lO and travelling expenses, and his fee for supervising the carrying out of a scheme would be 5 per cent. —On the motion of Cr Forsyth seconded by the Mayor, it was decided to obtain a report from Mr Crooks. The Pipe Contract. —Mr H. H. Metcalf wrote intimating that his fee for reporting on the carrying out of the contract would be £SO, the council to find the necessary labour and materials. —Received. The Works Committee recommended as follows: — Reticulation Mains.—That Messrs Powell and Co. be written to stating that their offer for laying reticulation mains will be accepted on complying with the conditions of contract. A Sub-division Scheme.—That the sheme of sub-division s übmitted by Mr Cheal for Mr F. Hammond be approved subiect to the borough solicitor advising that by doing so the council will not become liable for the formation of the road. Street Works. That plans and specifications be prepared for the formation of Ngatai street as 3onn as possible.—That plans and specifications be prepared to continue footpath from opposite Mr J. R. Graham's house to Jennings' street and at the same time put in two storm water culverts in Jennings' street adjoining the bridge, and a culvert to take the storm water away from the front of the English Church. Alexandra Street Water Pipes.— That the borough workmen be set to work to aly the three-inch water pipes from the main in Rora street down Alexandra street to the saleyards under the supervision of the engineer at once. The report was adopted. Foremen's Reports:—
"Since my last report my work has been cleaning weeds and filling holes, clearing some of the drains in the various streets, also water channels and slips. I have metalled some parts of Awakino road and attended to the water table of same. The footpath at the groin will need facining and filling. I will also require a little timber for repairing bridge in Duke street, the present planks are beginning to break away. A culvert is required at the crossing by the English Church, and one by King street bridge. A small bridgeway is necessary at the crossing at the end of flora street,—S. Hickson, Feb. 29th, 1912.
I beg to submit a brief report for the period ending Monday, March 1 Ith. During the last week on account of the wet weather very little dray work ha 3 been done. The men have been engaged on spalling and quarrying stone ready for crushing. The street formation has been brought up to the required level, but requires a few days' carting to bring it to the width specified. The following is a summary of the work done and material used-.—Carting to street formation 23i days at 13s 6d, £ls 16s 9d; wages including supervision foramtion work, £4O os 9d; spalling and quarrying stone 140 cubic yards at 2s, £l4; clearing drain and laying Bin pipes, 9s; total, £7O lis 6d.—W. King Street Bridge.—The engineer in referring to the necessity for strengthening the bridge said the work would cost perhaps more than they had anticipated, and he would like" the council's authority to proceed with, it. The cost would probably reach £35 or £4o.—The engineer was instructed to go on with the work. Borough Foreman.—Mr W. Ireland was appointed to the position. Opening Municipal Buildings.—Cr Tammadge said some of the leading Maoris had expressed the wish that the Hon. Sir James Carroll should be invited to the opening ceremony of the Municipal Buildings.—The Mayor said he had just received a message from Sir Joseph Ward to the effect that the Prime Minister could not perform the opening ceremony on his present visit to Auckland. The matter would therefore have to be deferred and he would see that Sir James Carroll wa=< invited. Plan and Specifications.C—r Young drew attention to the fact that duplicate plans had not been prepared for the various works. In order to safeguard the Council no original plans should be allowed to leave the office. , >jhe clerk was instructed to inform the engineer that duplicate plans were required. Drainage By-Laws.—On the recommendation of the Works Committee it was decided to adopt the Hamilton borough by-laws with alterations to suit local conditions. Building on Street.—Resolved that Rewatu Hiriako be given notice to move his building off Carroll street. Night Soil.—The clerk said there were a number of complaints about the manner in which the night soil contract was being carried out. lhe clerk was instructed :to write to the contractor to the effect that owing to the unsatisfactory manner in wbicn the contract was being carried out a claim was to be made against his charges for the new h'ali were fixed at 5s per meeting Z to 10.30 p.m.. 7s 6d to midnight, and 10s after midnight. Pipe Contract. -In dealing with Mr Metcalf's offer to report on the pipe contract the question of the report of
the special committee on the subject cropped up. Cr Forsyth held that the report in question had been held over pending receipt oi the opinion from Mr Martin, and now, that the opinion had been received the report had been shelved. v
The Mayor s?id the opinion had led to the payment of the account to the Spiral Pipe Company, and that, in his opinion, settled the question, Eventually it was decided upon the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Forsyth, that the report be referred back to the committee together with all matters connected therewith. Tenders. McDonald and Poole's tender of £B7 for the crusher binnn was accepted. Furnishing.—The tender of Messrs Pattison and Lockington (£62 7s 6d) was accepted.
