MANGAPEHI.

e Own Correspondent. The local sports meeting, to be held on the 30th inst., promises to be an unqualified success. Mr G. G. Hill is a most diligent and energetic secretary, and the strong committee is doing its utmost to make the function a success. At a meeting held Wednesday evening last, it was decided t-i affiliate with the Auckland Union, thus falling into line with To Kuiti. Otorohanga, and other clubs. Visiting runners will be able to do three or four meetings in succession, if they so desire. A programme of twenty events, with prize money to the new club, but I have no doubt whatever, of its success. The 12(1 yards Sheffield, of £lO, should attract some good entries. The second attempt by the local Tennis Club to capture the Howard Shield proved also unsuccessful, though the fight put up was a very good one. The matches, near the finish, stood at live all. with the eleventh, a combined double, to decide the fate of the Shield. To Kuiti proved too strong m this, and the Shield remained. We would very much like a To Kuiti team to visit us some Saturday. We can promise the players an enjoyable day. The ladies' handicap tournament for a wrist watch is to be' completed this week. Miss W. Johnson, though Ml behind scratch, in a game of I'O points up, looks a likely winner of this event. Another handicap ladies' singles will then be played for a gold brooch, a trophy presented by Mr David Silk, jeweller, of Auckland. These tournaments, with ladder eom- ' petitions, give the club a busy time. and another court could well bo done , with.
